A client from the United States engaged RF element to design a 5GHz MIMO sector antenna with specific performance criteria. The client aimed to achieve a 360-degree coverage of 5.8GHz WiFi signals using four of these antennas. The project required a meticulous approach to meet the client's demands for high gain and precise beamwidth.

Challenges

The primary challenge was to design an antenna with a gain exceeding 15dBi and a horizontal beamwidth of 90 degrees. This specification was crucial as the client intended to deploy four antennas to form a complete 360-degree coverage pattern.

Our engineering team embarked on an innovative design process to meet the client's stringent requirements:

  1. Gain Enhancement: We started by analyzing our existing 5GHz MIMO antenna designs and identified areas for improvement to achieve the desired gain. Through meticulous engineering, we were able to enhance the antenna's gain to exceed 15dBi.

  2. Beamwidth Optimization: To achieve the required 90-degree horizontal beamwidth, we redesigned the aluminum reflector base structure. This modification allowed for a more compact reflection pattern, ensuring that each antenna segment covered the desired 90 degrees.

  3. Polarization Design: To minimize signal interference among the four antennas when combined for 360-degree coverage, we introduced a ±45-degree polarization scheme. This design choice facilitated better signal management and contributed to the high-gain performance.

Performance Testing and Iterations
