Background

A client from Taiwan approached RF element with a unique requirement for a single-port, dual band grid antenna capable of supporting both 2.4GHz (2400-2500MHz) and 5GHz (5150-5850MHz) frequency bands. The client specified that the antenna must have a gain greater than 15dBi. Recognizing the market gap where grid antennas typically operate on a single frequency band, our RF element engineers identified the development of a dual band grid antenna as a strategic opportunity.

Challenges

The primary challenge was to design a single-port antenna that could efficiently operate on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously, without compromising performance or gain. Additionally, the antenna had to be cost-effective, fitting within the client's budget while meeting the high-performance criteria.

RF element's Solution

Our engineering team embarked on an innovative design process to meet these challenges:

  1. Dual-Band Circuit Board Development: We developed a new circuit board capable of supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. This board was designed to fit within the dimensions of existing radomes, reducing the need for costly redesigns and maintaining cost efficiency.

  2. High-Gain Design: To meet the high-gain requirement (>15dBi), our engineers designed a new aluminum signal reflector. This reflector was engineered to concentrate and direct the signal more effectively, enhancing the antenna's gain through focused grid reflection.

  3. Antenna Structure Optimization: Multiple iterations were conducted to adjust the antenna structure, optimizing the  VSWR to ensure it was less than 1.8. This optimization was crucial for achieving the best possible performance from the dual band grid antenna.

Performance Testing and Iterations

Our engineers conducted extensive performance testing, making several design iterations to fine-tune the antenna's characteristics. This rigorous process ensured that the final product not only met but exceeded the client's performance expectations.

The culmination of our efforts resulted in a dual band grid antenna that not only met the client's performance requirements but also achieved optimal working performance.
